On Saturday, Jeff Burga, Eric Gaines, and myself decided to forgo the crowds at Killington and attempt to build a jump somewhere on Mt. Mansfield. My claims of over 2 feet of snow at the top did little to convince the others that we would in fact be able to make a booter, but even so, they agreed to join in for a hike. Motivated by the rare New England sun, we hiked to a spot right under the top of the Quad and began to dig.
The snow was perfect- wet, deep, and sticky. The jump went up in half an hour.
While others in Vermont stood in undoubtedly long lines at Killington, we stood alone, catching our breath, looking down at an almost perfect little 4 foot wedge. It was Jeff and Eric’s first day of the season, so they had the opportunity for only one turn to shed summers rust before they found themselves in the air.

Jeff's first hit of the season
We spent several hours lapping the jump in the warm still air. We saw surprisingly few people throughout the day- so few that I mistakenly figured that we were some of the only folks on the mountain at all. Wrong.
We decided to head down as the sun began receding and the landing began to harden. The snow below us had been pushed up by several cats into lips perfect for popping off of and slashing. Halfway down, we ran across the first of many skiers and riders making a late day ascent of Mansfield. It seems as though most did not have the desire to hike to the sunny pseudo-summit, but were instead content to play in the icy shadows further below.
After a cold PBR and a quick thumb through the day’s shots on Eric’s camera, it was off to a hot shower followed by a Yeasayer show in Middlebury. I can only hope that Saturday is indicative of the season to come. So fucking awesome.
